A visit to Canon OPTO Malaysia Sdn Bhd

On 6/12/2011, our course had a visit to the Canon OPTO Malaysia Sdn Bhd. Early in the morning, we depart to the factory from the canteen of KSJ by UTM bus.
Once arrived there, we were shocked to see how big the factory about.

The picture above only shows a part of the building.

After we entered the building, the staffs there gave us a briefing about the history of the Canon Opto Malaysia Sdn Bhd and some safety precautions about the visit. The first camera made by kwanon (name of Canon at that time) was in 1934. In 1935, the name of kwanon was changed to Canon. In 1969, the company changed name from Canon Camera co.Inc to Canon Inc.

In 2010, the net sales of Canon OPTO Malaysia Sdn Bhd was USD 45764 million and net income was USD 3044 million. The total employee of Canon was 197386 paxs.
The products of the Canon were digital camera, EF lenses, video lens Unit, optical lenses (including Penta Prism). According to the staff, they will change the model of their products every year to meet the demand of the world. They also emphasize the quality of the products as the HQ of their company is very strict. Local workers and foreign workers (Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Vietnam) cooperate each other to produce the best products to the world.
After the briefing, we had the breakfast at the canteen there.

After having the breakfast, we entered the factory to see the running process of the whole factory. It divided into two sections to manufacture the digital camera and the lenses. Very sorry to say that we cannot take photo inside the factory. It is kind of confidential…
When we entered it, a funny smell of chemical choked our nose very soon. At that moment, I recalled back the time I worked in the electronic factory that manufacture the circuit panels during form 4. I used to be worked in line to print the PCB by using the printers. And guess what! I also found that the factory also using the line system and printers to manufacture the products. However, as it is the branch of the Japan companies, the machines that used in it are very advanced and expansive. According to the staff, the prototypes of the lenses that produced are cheap. But after using the expensive machines to manufacture the prototype, it becomes expensive.
At there, we managed to see about how the line processes the digital camera. Beginning from the components, it processes to become the combination of the components on the PCB and finally to the final product, a complete camera. The workers there work very serious and in a professional way. I can see how fast they work and although we are there, they seem not affected and continue to do their work like we didn’t exist. These working ethnics are worth to be learnt if we want to be successful in our career which is engineer in the future. The digital camera that we found there are in black and pink in colour. The staffs also say that they set a program in the products which need to be unlocked first before using the camera. This precaution is to avoid the workers to steal the products out of the factory although there have a few metal detectors at the entrance. They also use the theory of the reflection angle and reflective index to test and ensure that the digital camera and lenses do not have flaws and malfunction.
We also visit the lenses manufacturing section to see about how the lenses made. There are four processes to manufacture the lenses which are grinding, smoothing, polishing and coating. They used a brown liquid chemical and machines to undergo the first three processes. The coating process is executed in a room that contains full of the gigantic and complex machines in it. The staff explained that this process eventually increases the price of the lenses dramatically. The extremely hot temperature is used to coat the lenses by the machines. Too bad that I cannot take some photo of them…
About the strength of the Canon, I will say that it will be certainly about their quality of the products. Look at those spirits of the worker to work and they know that the procedures to manufacture the products cannot be neglected. All of them work in a systematic way with speed and precise. About the weakness of the Canon, the products of the factory are very limited as the license to manufacture the products under the name of Canon has to be approved by Japanese company.
After receiving the souvenir from the Canon, we finished our trip with full of satisfaction. We go back to KSJ at around 2.30pm and this will certainly become a great experience in our entire life.

New tools coming !!

On 29 Nov 2011 (Tuesday), I had a big surprise from Mr.Redzuan. At first, my friends and I were asked to go to MJIIT office to take some equipments. Then I started thinking : what are the things that need four of us to carry? Guess what? That's the materials for us to do the mini project.

After that, we also received an awesome tools bag which contains screwdriver, solder wire, sucker and the others. The most important thing is we actually have the chance to use the new pack of tools. HAHA... Glad to be the first year. I promised that I will take good care of them...

Besides that, we also received the new multimeter and soldering stand. We played around them and rearrange the parts of thm into a complete one.

Others than that, we also received the new electric components from Mr.Redzuan such as LED, transistors, capacitors and the others. The two set of components that we received consists of TH and SMD.

After receiving the components and tools, Mr.Redzuan gave us a brief explaination and demonstration of how we are going to do using these components. Now, I know that the soldering parts need a longer time to process. The video that Mr.Redzuan showed us was also interesting. It was a the procedure to prepare the board for the components.

Although the last one hour we can't managed to undergo our work due to the UV generator was locked inside a room and the others had to use the workshop place, we had a good experience and happy hour with Mr.Redzuan.

Test 2

On 22/11, our class was having the test 2 of the ESE. It was all about the lesson that Mr.Redzuan taught about which were multisim and ultiboard.

After giving the test paper and some briefly instruction, we then tried our best to do the multisim and ultiboard in th computer for 2 hours.

After struggling in the multisim and ultiboard very hard, I submitted the products to Mr.Redzuan. Hopefully I can get a good result for them...

Ultiboard (continue)

Back to the ultiboard lesson today. Today we learned more about the design of our circuit in the ultiboard.

After we put the electrical component in all around of our board, we learned that it is not enough. We have to arrange our components. The autoroute function in the ultiboard allowed it to find the suitable way or route for the components to connect to each other. When the yellow line appeared, it show that the position of the component we put is not suitable and have to arrange it to other place.

After all the route is complete, then it will show all green line, means the route is ok already. Then, we also had been taught to play around the position of the route and components, whether to decide it to be top of the board or bottom of the board. We also can lock the route up , so then the route will not being move when we move the components to other place of the board.

Next, the properties of the routes that represent the wire that have to be connected can also being adjusted such as changing the width of the wire. But, if we do that, there will be a problem too. As the wire become thick, the wire designed on the board will overlap if two or more of the wire are close together and it need to be adjusted again.

Besides that, we also learned pac and jumper in the design of our board. The hole for the component to be inserted which known as pac have to be large enough to being soldered. If not, the solder will mix to another pac that close to the previous one and whole of the circuit will be ruined.

Furthermore, we also can design the name of our board on the board to make it nicer. The size, width and type of the word can be adjusted easily.

Lastly, the board that had been completed have to be printed out. We had been taught to see the preview of our board in 2D before we print out the board. Here, we can list out the page that need to be print and seperate them in different papers.

Before we were going back, we also watched the video about the match of the robots. It is so interesting that I almost wish to design my own robot now after watched the video.

I wish I have the good luck and good memory  for the test tomorrow. Hopefully it will be not so difficult...

Multisim 2

Continued our lesson of yesterday, we were also doing multisim for today. We were asked to do more circuit design for today and Mr Redzuan trained us to do in a faster way.

After that, Mr Redzuan also taught us to use the instruments given in the bar on the top of the multisim program which include multimeter, oscilloscope, measurement probe, agilent multimeter, agilent oscilloscope, function generator and others. By using these kind of instruments, we were able to measure the value of the voltage, current, resistance and others of different electrical components existed in the circuit easily. Also, we were also can get the waveform by using the oscilloscope and adjust the frequency of the voltage source to see different kind of waveform. They are just like the real instruments and it is very convenient when using them to design a circuit.

Next, after we played around the multisim, we also had been taught to transfer the circuit that had been designed to the ultiboard. In the previous lesson, we only had been taught to transfer the circuit designed to the ultiboard and looked them in a 3D way. Today I just realised that we need to arrange the component and connect it first before we transfered them to the board!! But due to lack of time today, we were not able to do that today...

For the ultiboard part, we had been taught that how to design our board. By clicking the function on the top of the ultiboard program, we managed to play around the shape of our board and how to make a hole on the board. The components that had been transfered also can be dragged and placed anywhere on the board. But, we need to make sure our board designed is a complete board and not a seperate board. Otherwise, the wire cannot connect the components together.

That's all I learnt for today. Very satisfied and thanks to Mr Redzuan. Looking forward the next class!!

Multisim

Today, Mr Redzuan taught us for three hours again in the afternoon like the plan go on. Our class had learned an important thing in electronic system which is multisim. We are lucky that we have the multisim software in the computer provided in the workshop. Although I have little disappointed when Mr Redzuan mentioned that the audio system was not prepared in the computer, but later we can get the sound while simulate the circuit in the multisim.

Besides that, we also had been taught to find the components in the multisim software and design the circuit. And very sorry that I am dozing off while Mr Redzuan was giving the talk about the multisim as it is very tired to have the class in the afternoon and I am not enough sleep in the field trip too...

However, when we were told to practise to design the circuit as shown, luckily I managed to complete the work that asked by Mr Redzuan and not feel so tired anymore. I guess that I am not a good listener but probably can be a good practitioner.

The ultiboard that manage to see the circuit designed in multisim in 3D is also very awesome! Also, the buzzer that make the sound is also very fun. The pitch of sound is getting higher when the frequency of buzzer become higher. In short, it is a good lesson for today >.<

Ex for multisim:

P/S:  Mr Redzuan, thanks for the sweet ^ ^

Lesson by Mr. Rasli

On 1/11 (Tuesday), we have the first lesson taught by Mr. Rasli. The information shared by Mr.Rasli with all of us was fantastic!
We had learned about power electronic is a combination engineers between power and electronics. It concern in power level rather than signal level. It also divided into many fields such as solid style physic, electronic theory, electronics, power systems, electronic machines, stimulation and computing and the others. In addition, the PE components had been taught by Mr. Rasli. For example diodes, SCR, BJT, GTO, IGBT, FET, JFET, UJT and the others.
Next, OLED is also a part of lesson that attracted me a lot. The OLED stands for Organic Light Emitting Diode. Here is the structure of OLED.

We also learned FPGA that is Field Programmable Gate Array. It contains large digital designs and compile the logic using software to create binary file, then download it.
PE application is also introduced by Mr.Rasli. Now, we know that PE can be used in several categories such as in residential area, commercial, industrial, transportation, utility system, aerospace, telecommunication,  electro-technical application and the others.
We also learned that IC which means integrated circuit is a huge of discrete elements that are compressed in one single chip of silicon.
