Last lesson of Introduction to ESE

On 20th December 2011, this is the last lesson of Introduction of ESE which conducted by Dr. Kamal.
At that day, Dr.Kamal gave some briefing about the course of next semester which is digital electronic. The most interesting part was the exercise of binary numbers and communications Code worksheet.

After taught by Dr.Kamal, We learnt that this course is important because the machine only read in machine language which is 0 and 1 (binary numbers). The addition and subtraction of binary numbers gave us about the knowledge to play with the machine language.

We also learnt that the black dot represents the number of 1 and white dot represents the number of 0. This dot is stored in the computer system which will convert it to human language in the output.

For me, I will say that this Introduction to ESE is essential to us as the student of SMJE because we learnt a lot of things during the lesson and practical. Now, we all have some basic knowledge to this ESE and I will work harder next year. Thanks to Mr.Redzuan, Dr.Kamal and Dr.Rasli. I will never forget the lesson that had been taught.

Electric lesson

On 19th December 2011, this is the last lesson with Mr.Redzuan, yet we also have a unforgettable experience.
That day, we learnt that how to connect wire in the extension wire and fluorescent lamp.

This make me recall back the chapter electric in form 3 which taught about the three types of wire which are live, earth, and neutral. In 3-pin plug, the normal current that flow through is 13A. If exceed that, the fuse which located beside the live wire will automatically cut off the supply of electricity to protect the plug and electric device.
First, Mr.Redzuan demonstrate to us that how to connect the wire correctly.

After that, it was our show time. We do the wiring in a group of two. Chin and I connected the wire carefully without any careless mistake to affect the extension wire and fluorescent lamp to function. We followed the instruction to connect the live, earth and neutral wire in the extension wire and fluorescent lamp.

Within one hour, we managed to complete the wiring and surprisingly, it actually function while testing! We were so happy. Next, we proceeded to the last part which connect the wire in DC in the fluorescent lamp. We were all provided a DC “cok” and had to do some wiring on it. Chin and I did it in one shot also. Fortunately, it also functioned.

We all have fun to do the wiring as never try it before. Hopefully I can fix the extension wire and fluorescent lamp from now on.

Final product of mini project

On Tuesday, early in the morning, my friends and I were already there to wait for Mr.Redzuan to open the workshop as we eager to continue our work on the mini project.

I continue soldered my components carefully onto my board. The solder part had to be careful as it cannot touch the other route on the board. If that happened, I would have to redo again from the first step. Also, I need to look out for the tips of the soldering tool. If the tips get darken, the solder on my cmponents will also be dark and not shinny. So, we shared the soldering paste to make the tips to become always in bright.

The most challeging part to solder is the soldering section for the circuit 2. The IC and other components such as LED and resistors is so small until I need to use the forceps to hold the components before I soldered them. With full of focus and carefulness, I soldered them nicely on the position.

Finally, after 2 hours, the final products of ny two circuit boards were completed. Although I do it a bit slow, I was very proud of myself as this was the first time that I produced a circuit board all by my own. And guess what? Both my circuit board function in good condition!! Can't believe it!!

This is the circuit board 1. For board 2, I submitted to Mr.Redzuan already after testing it. It was a lot of fun to do the practical work for circuit board and I nearly get addicted to do it. I hope that we can learned more things in the future.

Mini project

Last week, it was the greatest experience I ever have as finally I can produce my own mini project. Under the guidance of Mr.RedZuan, we do the circuit design and the board by our own from the beginning step to the end.

Firstly, Mr Redzuan shows us about the video that gave us a briefing about the procedures to work on the circuit board.

After tear off the plastic on the circuit board, we use the cellotape to fix the position of our board outline on the board to prepare for the expose of UV ray. The time was set for one and half minute to expose the board outline on the board. Safety precaution was taken to avoid the blockage of the cellotape on the board outline.

Next, the board that had been fully exposed was ready to be developed. The chemical we used for developing is sodium and this chemical is essential to remove the green chemical surface (photorysis). By agitate the tray that contained the board and sodium liquid, we could see that the green surface was removed successfully.

Then, the etching process is the step that I hate most. The acid powder that needed to be colleted is burning my hand. Also need to be careful as the acid powder is poisonous that will cause the cancer disease.
After collected the acid powder, hot water was used to dissolve the acid powder in the tray to undergo the etching process. This process removed the copper area that are not needed on the board.

After that, 50% of our board is complete. The tools was provided for us to cut the board into seperate board for our group member.

The drilling process will be the next step for us. This process make holes on the board for the through-hole components. The pacs that have the symbol of hole on the board were the places that need to be drilled. This technic was also been taught by Mr.Redzuan to avoid the misuse of the drilling tools as the needle that use to drill is easy to being broke if we use the wrong method to handle.

Then, we need to assemble the components on the board before we soldered the components on the board. This two processes were the processes that took us for a long time. Mr.Redzuan showed us the correct way to solder the through-hole components and SMD on different boards. But due to the lack of time, we only manage to do it to the halfway on Monday and Mr.Redzuan allowed us to continue our work on the following day.

A visit to Canon OPTO Malaysia Sdn Bhd

On 6/12/2011, our course had a visit to the Canon OPTO Malaysia Sdn Bhd. Early in the morning, we depart to the factory from the canteen of KSJ by UTM bus.
Once arrived there, we were shocked to see how big the factory about.

The picture above only shows a part of the building.

After we entered the building, the staffs there gave us a briefing about the history of the Canon Opto Malaysia Sdn Bhd and some safety precautions about the visit. The first camera made by kwanon (name of Canon at that time) was in 1934. In 1935, the name of kwanon was changed to Canon. In 1969, the company changed name from Canon Camera co.Inc to Canon Inc.

In 2010, the net sales of Canon OPTO Malaysia Sdn Bhd was USD 45764 million and net income was USD 3044 million. The total employee of Canon was 197386 paxs.
The products of the Canon were digital camera, EF lenses, video lens Unit, optical lenses (including Penta Prism). According to the staff, they will change the model of their products every year to meet the demand of the world. They also emphasize the quality of the products as the HQ of their company is very strict. Local workers and foreign workers (Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Vietnam) cooperate each other to produce the best products to the world.
After the briefing, we had the breakfast at the canteen there.

After having the breakfast, we entered the factory to see the running process of the whole factory. It divided into two sections to manufacture the digital camera and the lenses. Very sorry to say that we cannot take photo inside the factory. It is kind of confidential…
When we entered it, a funny smell of chemical choked our nose very soon. At that moment, I recalled back the time I worked in the electronic factory that manufacture the circuit panels during form 4. I used to be worked in line to print the PCB by using the printers. And guess what! I also found that the factory also using the line system and printers to manufacture the products. However, as it is the branch of the Japan companies, the machines that used in it are very advanced and expansive. According to the staff, the prototypes of the lenses that produced are cheap. But after using the expensive machines to manufacture the prototype, it becomes expensive.
At there, we managed to see about how the line processes the digital camera. Beginning from the components, it processes to become the combination of the components on the PCB and finally to the final product, a complete camera. The workers there work very serious and in a professional way. I can see how fast they work and although we are there, they seem not affected and continue to do their work like we didn’t exist. These working ethnics are worth to be learnt if we want to be successful in our career which is engineer in the future. The digital camera that we found there are in black and pink in colour. The staffs also say that they set a program in the products which need to be unlocked first before using the camera. This precaution is to avoid the workers to steal the products out of the factory although there have a few metal detectors at the entrance. They also use the theory of the reflection angle and reflective index to test and ensure that the digital camera and lenses do not have flaws and malfunction.
We also visit the lenses manufacturing section to see about how the lenses made. There are four processes to manufacture the lenses which are grinding, smoothing, polishing and coating. They used a brown liquid chemical and machines to undergo the first three processes. The coating process is executed in a room that contains full of the gigantic and complex machines in it. The staff explained that this process eventually increases the price of the lenses dramatically. The extremely hot temperature is used to coat the lenses by the machines. Too bad that I cannot take some photo of them…
About the strength of the Canon, I will say that it will be certainly about their quality of the products. Look at those spirits of the worker to work and they know that the procedures to manufacture the products cannot be neglected. All of them work in a systematic way with speed and precise. About the weakness of the Canon, the products of the factory are very limited as the license to manufacture the products under the name of Canon has to be approved by Japanese company.
After receiving the souvenir from the Canon, we finished our trip with full of satisfaction. We go back to KSJ at around 2.30pm and this will certainly become a great experience in our entire life.

New tools coming !!

On 29 Nov 2011 (Tuesday), I had a big surprise from Mr.Redzuan. At first, my friends and I were asked to go to MJIIT office to take some equipments. Then I started thinking : what are the things that need four of us to carry? Guess what? That's the materials for us to do the mini project.

After that, we also received an awesome tools bag which contains screwdriver, solder wire, sucker and the others. The most important thing is we actually have the chance to use the new pack of tools. HAHA... Glad to be the first year. I promised that I will take good care of them...

Besides that, we also received the new multimeter and soldering stand. We played around them and rearrange the parts of thm into a complete one.

Others than that, we also received the new electric components from Mr.Redzuan such as LED, transistors, capacitors and the others. The two set of components that we received consists of TH and SMD.

After receiving the components and tools, Mr.Redzuan gave us a brief explaination and demonstration of how we are going to do using these components. Now, I know that the soldering parts need a longer time to process. The video that Mr.Redzuan showed us was also interesting. It was a the procedure to prepare the board for the components.

Although the last one hour we can't managed to undergo our work due to the UV generator was locked inside a room and the others had to use the workshop place, we had a good experience and happy hour with Mr.Redzuan.

Test 2

On 22/11, our class was having the test 2 of the ESE. It was all about the lesson that Mr.Redzuan taught about which were multisim and ultiboard.

After giving the test paper and some briefly instruction, we then tried our best to do the multisim and ultiboard in th computer for 2 hours.

After struggling in the multisim and ultiboard very hard, I submitted the products to Mr.Redzuan. Hopefully I can get a good result for them...

Ultiboard (continue)

Back to the ultiboard lesson today. Today we learned more about the design of our circuit in the ultiboard.

After we put the electrical component in all around of our board, we learned that it is not enough. We have to arrange our components. The autoroute function in the ultiboard allowed it to find the suitable way or route for the components to connect to each other. When the yellow line appeared, it show that the position of the component we put is not suitable and have to arrange it to other place.

After all the route is complete, then it will show all green line, means the route is ok already. Then, we also had been taught to play around the position of the route and components, whether to decide it to be top of the board or bottom of the board. We also can lock the route up , so then the route will not being move when we move the components to other place of the board.

Next, the properties of the routes that represent the wire that have to be connected can also being adjusted such as changing the width of the wire. But, if we do that, there will be a problem too. As the wire become thick, the wire designed on the board will overlap if two or more of the wire are close together and it need to be adjusted again.

Besides that, we also learned pac and jumper in the design of our board. The hole for the component to be inserted which known as pac have to be large enough to being soldered. If not, the solder will mix to another pac that close to the previous one and whole of the circuit will be ruined.

Furthermore, we also can design the name of our board on the board to make it nicer. The size, width and type of the word can be adjusted easily.

Lastly, the board that had been completed have to be printed out. We had been taught to see the preview of our board in 2D before we print out the board. Here, we can list out the page that need to be print and seperate them in different papers.

Before we were going back, we also watched the video about the match of the robots. It is so interesting that I almost wish to design my own robot now after watched the video.

I wish I have the good luck and good memory  for the test tomorrow. Hopefully it will be not so difficult...

Multisim 2

Continued our lesson of yesterday, we were also doing multisim for today. We were asked to do more circuit design for today and Mr Redzuan trained us to do in a faster way.

After that, Mr Redzuan also taught us to use the instruments given in the bar on the top of the multisim program which include multimeter, oscilloscope, measurement probe, agilent multimeter, agilent oscilloscope, function generator and others. By using these kind of instruments, we were able to measure the value of the voltage, current, resistance and others of different electrical components existed in the circuit easily. Also, we were also can get the waveform by using the oscilloscope and adjust the frequency of the voltage source to see different kind of waveform. They are just like the real instruments and it is very convenient when using them to design a circuit.

Next, after we played around the multisim, we also had been taught to transfer the circuit that had been designed to the ultiboard. In the previous lesson, we only had been taught to transfer the circuit designed to the ultiboard and looked them in a 3D way. Today I just realised that we need to arrange the component and connect it first before we transfered them to the board!! But due to lack of time today, we were not able to do that today...

For the ultiboard part, we had been taught that how to design our board. By clicking the function on the top of the ultiboard program, we managed to play around the shape of our board and how to make a hole on the board. The components that had been transfered also can be dragged and placed anywhere on the board. But, we need to make sure our board designed is a complete board and not a seperate board. Otherwise, the wire cannot connect the components together.

That's all I learnt for today. Very satisfied and thanks to Mr Redzuan. Looking forward the next class!!

Multisim

Today, Mr Redzuan taught us for three hours again in the afternoon like the plan go on. Our class had learned an important thing in electronic system which is multisim. We are lucky that we have the multisim software in the computer provided in the workshop. Although I have little disappointed when Mr Redzuan mentioned that the audio system was not prepared in the computer, but later we can get the sound while simulate the circuit in the multisim.

Besides that, we also had been taught to find the components in the multisim software and design the circuit. And very sorry that I am dozing off while Mr Redzuan was giving the talk about the multisim as it is very tired to have the class in the afternoon and I am not enough sleep in the field trip too...

However, when we were told to practise to design the circuit as shown, luckily I managed to complete the work that asked by Mr Redzuan and not feel so tired anymore. I guess that I am not a good listener but probably can be a good practitioner.

The ultiboard that manage to see the circuit designed in multisim in 3D is also very awesome! Also, the buzzer that make the sound is also very fun. The pitch of sound is getting higher when the frequency of buzzer become higher. In short, it is a good lesson for today >.<

Ex for multisim:

P/S:  Mr Redzuan, thanks for the sweet ^ ^

Lesson by Mr. Rasli

On 1/11 (Tuesday), we have the first lesson taught by Mr. Rasli. The information shared by Mr.Rasli with all of us was fantastic!
We had learned about power electronic is a combination engineers between power and electronics. It concern in power level rather than signal level. It also divided into many fields such as solid style physic, electronic theory, electronics, power systems, electronic machines, stimulation and computing and the others. In addition, the PE components had been taught by Mr. Rasli. For example diodes, SCR, BJT, GTO, IGBT, FET, JFET, UJT and the others.
Next, OLED is also a part of lesson that attracted me a lot. The OLED stands for Organic Light Emitting Diode. Here is the structure of OLED.

We also learned FPGA that is Field Programmable Gate Array. It contains large digital designs and compile the logic using software to create binary file, then download it.
PE application is also introduced by Mr.Rasli. Now, we know that PE can be used in several categories such as in residential area, commercial, industrial, transportation, utility system, aerospace, telecommunication,  electro-technical application and the others.
We also learned that IC which means integrated circuit is a huge of discrete elements that are compressed in one single chip of silicon.

Presentation

On Tuesday which was 25. Oct. 2011, we were having a presentation in ESE class about the electronic system. Our group which was Chin Zhi Jie, Chong Chee Hwa and me presented a topic named fiber optic. Just before the presentation, we had already prepared an article and the minute of meeting about the topic that we were going to present.
We were nervous while presenting that day. I could see that the other groups were just as nervous as we were. Although the comments from the lecturers were not very good, I think we were doing a great job that day as I know the hardship that everyone had gone through during that week which had many test and presentation.
Next time, I will do the presentation better and more focus on the operation of the component in the electronic system. I will GAMBATEH!!!

Practical Test

On 24. Oct. 2011 (Monday) , our ESE class was having a practical test. The test could be said quite easy for us as everything in the test was taught by Mr.Redzuan before. All we have to do was just to memorise the colour of the code of the resistor and capacitor. The time given for the test was also enough for us to conduct the test although the instrument that required for the test was not enough.
The test included the test for resistor, capacitor, diode and the transistor. Each of us was provided nine electronic component that consist of the component I mentioned above. I think this kind of test is good as we can remember the lesson that taught before and revised it.
That day is actually the most suffering day I had as our class had three test in one day which were programming test (morning), ESE practical test (afternoon) and math test (night). I hope that I can score three of them with flying colour...

Transistor (Test Instrument)

Continued of Monday's Lesson

I was impressed by the usage of the transistor... Never thought that transistor is a multi-function electronic component before until being asked by Mr.Redzuan.

      Function of transistor
  • Act as a switch
  • Amplifier
  • Increase/decrease current, voltage, amplitude
  • General purpose
  • Audio driver
  • Current mirror (produce branch current)
  • Filter
  • Deflector
Also learned that there are two types of bipolar junction transistor) : NPN and PNP

By using digital multimeter and component analyzer, we are able to know that the emitter, base and collector of a transistor. On Monday, we also taught that how to use the oscilloscope. It is just like a TV to show the wave form that were being set in value of voltage and current.

Everything seem like piece of cake for Mr.Redzuan but I wonder that whether I can do it well and remember all the things that had been taught in the practical test. Start to worry now.....

Diode (Test Instrument)

Fun Diode
Type of Diode:
  • Rectifier diode
-Allow current to flow in one direction  only.
  • Zener diode
-Stable voltage
  • LED (light transmitting diode)
-Emitting light

Nice Monday lesson that learn about the diode. Information above is part of the lesson that conducted by Mr.Redzuan. We all have fun  and enjoy ourselves that day especially when testing the diode by using multimeter and component analyzer. We also know about the material of the diode which are germanium and silicon. The minimum voltage which can be pass through them are differ from each other. The range of LED is 1.73V-3V. I really know about many characteristic of the diode through this workshop. FANTASTIC!!!

Recognising The Electronic Component ^ ^

Really enjoy in this session today in ESE, taught by Mr.Redzuan. This is my first time to use the multimeter to test the electronic components. It's been a long time that I didn't touch the resistor and capacitor since the Kemahiran Hidup in Form 3. We had been taught to know the value of the resistors and capacitors too. It was a nice talk by Mr.Redzuan about the introduction of these electronic components.

We also experienced the charging and discharge of the capacitors by using the power supply and the voltmeter. I thought that the capacitor is only used for charging and discharging, now I know that the capacitor can also be used to filter the disturbance in electronic system. The most interesting part today is the consequence when we connect the terminal of the capacitor wrongly during charging. It eventually explode!!! The desciption of capacitor by using water tank is really suitable as the less capacity of the capacitor, the less electricity it can store.

I am looking forward the next workshop. Hopefully it will be as fun as today > <

First Workshop

Today, we are introduced the lesson of workshop that coming soon about the multisim and ultiboard. I am so looking forward to have the class tomorrow to experience the workshop of electronic system. I feel burden too as our classes are obviosly not enough if we want to be pro in electronic system. Yet, I will try my best to follow the steps and instructions of Mr.Redzuan. According to Mr.Redzuan, our new facility in the new building seem to be some kind of awesome technology. I wish we can use the buliding as soon as possible so we all no need to rush back to campus for lesson. I need to work harder and harder to fulfil my wish to work or further study in Japan. Buck up Buck up!!!

*P/S for Mr.Redzuan: Sorry to come late in class today... Promise that no next time :(

Fun Learning

On 4th Oktober, I have learn about some knowledge that mean a lot to me.

I hear and I forget,
I see and I remember,
I do and I understand.

This exactly show that HOW IMPORTANT the role of practical in our life. That's why the workshop and ningen ryoku( HUMAN SKILL) are required in our course in MJIIT. We also learned that active learning is a good conduct that are needed for every student and people in order to achieve success in our life. Futhermore, the chip making video is interesting and make me more interested in ESE. I anticipate the next lesson about ESE. Hopefully I can do well in this subject and manage to get the result in flying colour. Here is the exampe video about making electronic chips.

Tuesday, 27 September 2011

In your opinion, why and how good conduct is related to electronic system?

Well, in my opinion, good conduct really does relate to electronic system.

In present time that is my student's time, my attitude will affect my skill while doing or managing an electronic system. The attitude I mentioned about is active in giving idea and put all my effort to do what the lecturer tell me to do about ESE in order to learn more about ESE. Just like Susan in the video, good conduct can make her to know a lot about the subject and eventually become her interest. That's the aim I want to achieve. Briefly conclude, good conduct of a student is able to allow him or her to extract the knowledge about ESE given by lecturer as much as he or she can and then apply it in the future.

In the future time or work place, it is the time to apply what we learn about ESE in the career and to serve the society. But still, good conduct is an important issue among all the workers in the field of ESE. I saw that how the salesman cheated the people by selling the magical hardisc to someone and claimed that it consisted of large memory but actually it did not. Electronic system produced to cheat the others? That's totally not a good conduct and we must avoid that in the future. We must always have the thought that inventing or creating an electronic system  is to make life easier for the sake of our new generation and our country as well.

In everyday life, we must always have the good conduct and learn more about electronic system. This include how to manage the study time, how to discuss with coursemate properly about the electronic system, and how to know about more reference or source about the electronic system. We must set our mind in everyday morning : Today, I have to know about.... but not : Today, when is the break time... That is the most crucial part I think.

Fantastic Discussion ^ ^

What a tiring day today... But I have an enjoyable time during ESE period. My classmates and I had learned more about ESE as Dr.Kamal explained some details about the course outline of ESE. I had learned about the essence of belief which are Faith, Worship, monetary affairs, social conduct and good conduct.
The most interesting part during the lesson is about the discussion. Now, I know my first objective of learning is learn to serve the social and the country after I graduate. I can't deny that 'learn to earn' is also an important part in my life and I think both 'learn to serve' and 'learn to earn' can link to each other as I need fortune in order to serve the social and country well.
I never know that 5s which are sort, stabilize, shine, standardize and sustain play such the important roles in this society nowadays until today... If we take good care of our environment, we can make a difference. Let's just start it in my room... HOORAY! TIME TO WORK NOW!!!

Nice talk about ESE

That's a nice day yesterday as Dr. Kamal showed us about some ESE's information. The video about Susan and Robert is interesting and I wish to become like Susan but I know I have a long way to go. The Japanese language and the electronic circuit video yesterday really attract me a lot.Wish I can cope up my lesson and anything the lecturer want me to do. I am still a rookie and I hope I can adapt myself in this new environment as soon as possible...
Gambateh man!!
